Monday Movies

HILMA at 11 am 30th June

This is the story of Hilma af Klint, the woman who defied conventions and revolutionised the art world when her work was exhibited in 2019 at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC.

Hilma died in 1944, unknown and certainly not recognised as the woman who invented abstract painting, displacing Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian as the initiators of abstract painting and Modernism.

From her adoration of the Austrian spiritualist Rudolf Steiner to her unconventional romantic life, the film provides a nuanced portrait of a woman who chose to remain faithful to her vision as an artist, despite working in a hostile, misogynistic world that did not expect women to express themselves.

A COMPLETE UNKNOWN at 2 30 pm

New York, 1961. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an unknown 19-year-old named Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet), from Minnesota, arrives in Greenwich Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music.

As he forms his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement, refusing to be defined, makes a controversial choice that culturally reverberates worldwide.

When he encounters sexy swimming instructor Rusty (Ann-Margret), he considers staying around longer. After Lucky loses his winnings in the hotel pool, he’s forced to remain in Vegas long enough to win back his dough — but now he also wants to win the Rusty’s heart. Unfortunately, so does his slick racing enemy, Elmo (Cesare Danova).

CALENDAR GIRLS

After the death of her best friend’s husband from cancer, spirited Yorkshire housewife Chris Harper (Helen Mirren) hatches a scheme to raise money for a memorial to him. Utilizing a tradition from the hidebound Woman’s Institute association, Chris encourages Annie (Julie Walters) and their friends to create a calendar — with the novel detail of using the middle-aged women of their village as nude models. The idea stuns the husbands and a wary young photographer (Philip Glenister).

UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN

In an attempt to bring her out of a deep depression, her best friend, Patti (Sandra Oh), encourages Frances to take a tour of Italy. During the trip, the new divorcée impulsively decides to purchase a rural Tuscan villa and struggles to start her life anew amid colourful local characters, including the handsome Marcello (Raoul Bova).

Celfunde

On the first Saturday morning of each month, from 10am until 1pm, the library hosts a ‘local history surgery’ open to anyone interested in the history and heritage of Chalfont St Peter. The Celfunde Inheritance, the village’s local history and heritage group will welcome you with a cuppa and biscuits, if you’d like to share your knowledge of the village’s history, or to learn more, or if you have anything you’d like us to research on your behalf. We are particularly interested in hearing your memories and scanning old photographs of the village for posterity.
